Keeping Your Child Safe from Cyberbullying

It’s no secret that as long as popular social media sites have existed, the virtual distance between computer screens has acted as a veil behind which many bullies feel safer lashing out in disrespectful or harmful ways.

Cyberbullying is only becoming a bigger problem as the idea of anonymity online becomes increasingly popular. Sites like ask.fm, which allows questions from strangers, or apps like whisper, which allows anonymous conversations through picture messages, are making it easier for bullies to get away with leaving harmful comments.

Forbidding teens from using these websites or apps--assuming they’re at an age where
they’re old enough to make certain decisions about their own internet use-- ignores the issue rather than addressing it. That’s why it’s important to know how to recognize when cyberbullying is happening, as well as how to open up communication with your teen in order to make sure they stay safe and know how to properly deal with a bully.

The infographic below contains some statistics about cyberbullying as well as
some strategies for parents to protect their children and keep them safe online.
Ideally, there would be a way to stop cyberbulyling entirely. However, that aside, keep these tips in mind in case it does happen to your child.

Nigerian actor and film maker, Ugezu J Ugezu has challenged pastors and bishops in Nigeria to stand up against corrupt individuals in the government. The outspoken movie star says Men of God are a major problem in the country. According to him, corruption abounds in Nigeria because some Pastors are not challenging politicians in their churches. In his own words: “Any pastor, bishop or the so called General Overseer that wants to attract my respect must follow the example of Jesus Christ, the apostles and disciples by standing in the gap for ordinary people and speak boldly against bad governance and repugnant policies and decisions of the government in place. All you pastors that are looking for the big politician you will minister to, pray for, and be rewarded with fat envelope or possible credit alert are just pests. You are not pastors for Jesus the Christ who is your leader never did that. He challenged bad governance and vehemently spoke against the hypocrisy of the men in power all his life. Next thing you will tell me you are man of God and I wonder who then the man of the devil is. All ye ‘MEN OF GOD’ are the cardinal part of the problems we have in this country. You are the reasons the people in government are grossly not accountable to the people. You are looking for the money to buy private jets and those of you that already have private jets are looking for government waiver so they don’t ask you to pay the incredible amount airport authorities collect from private jet owners for parking space. Because of these, you don’t ever say anything and our public office holders are getting more corrupt. You guys are just pests, maybe ‘their’ pastors, never mine. Next thing you will force your blind members into endless night vigils as they pray for good government. Ask yourself a simple question:- is that what Jesus did? Did you read anywhere in the new testament where Jesus gathered the apostles and his followers for a night vigil to pray for good government? Good government can only come when the people are inspired and motivated to challenge the people in positions of authority to be reasonable, responsible, accountable, efficient, effective, diligent, meticulous and conscientious. Now, if you cannot inspire and motivate your followers to keep the government on their toes, if you cannot open your mouth and do what Jesus did, challenge the men in power and force them do the right things, then you better close that shrine you call your ministry and stop messing up the country. Do you agree with him?

Plans have been concluded for former Governor of Ogun State and Chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, Chief OlusegunOsoba, to defect from APC and unveil his new political party.
Though unconfirmed, our source revealed that Osoba is presently in Abuja to perfect the registration of the new political party and is billed to return to Abeokuta this weekend.
Osoba has been in a long brawl with the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun over who controls the party leadership in Ogun State. Efforts made by party leaders to appease Chief Osoba and surrender party leadership to Governor Amosun as stated in the party’s constitution was rebuffed.
Osoba is known to have a formidable structure in Ogun State as his loyalists constitute some members of the state House of Assembly, some House of Representative members and the three senators while Governor Amosun’s strength lies in the grassroot.
Reacting to this, a top party member who spoke under the condition of anonymity said Osoba’s action is a matter of his principle and belief.
His words: “The day Chief MKO Abiola died, Chief Osoba would have been mobbed but for the intervention of people, he was whisked away. He was accused of rubbing minds with military junta of Abacha. Most people do not see him as a true democrat.
“Now again, for eight years when Gbenga Daniel was governor of Ogun State, he could not go to Ogun State but save for AsiwajuTinubu. Osoba lived all his eight years in Lagos under the protection of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.”

NECO Records Best Results in Six Years

AFTER six years of poor performance by its candidates, the National Examinations Council (NECO) Wednesday announced that 52.29 percent of candidates who sat for this year’s June/July Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) passed at credit level in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Announcing the result yesterday in Minna, Niger State, the NECO Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Promise Okpala, said that 74.30 percent of the candidates made five credits and above generally.
According to him, of the 989,622 persons who registered for the examinations, only 978,886 candidates eventually wrote the examination, which covers about 76 subjects. Giving a breakdown of the result, Okpala said that 72.58 percent scored credit level and above in English Language while 69.49 percent made similar grades in Mathematics.
In sciences, 72.86 percent of candidates that sat for Chemistry had credits, 69.38 percent of Physics candidates had credit levels while Biology candidates registered 67.83 percent credit grades.
Okpala noted that beyond the cost of running the examination, insecurity in many parts of the country grossly affected the council’s logistics operations during the school-based examination.
According to him, “in spite of the challenges facing the council, I feel highly elated that the conduct of the 2014 SSCE examinations was a huge success.”
He added that the council’s efforts at reducing examination malpractices paid off, as only 0.44 percent of candidates were involved in malpractices, and “this low level of malpractice was an eloquent testimony to the painstaking efforts the council has consistently made to eradicate examination malpractice.”
Meanwhile, 16 schools were de-recognized for three years while six supervisors and one invigilator were blacklisted for their involvement in examination malpractice during the case in view.
An analysis of past results showed a steady improvement over the past three years, with NECO posting the best result in the current year.
